Cervical Disc Disease
Age, neck injury, poor posture or diseases such as arthritis can lead to degeneration of
the bones or joints of the cervical spine, causing the formation of disc herniation or bone
spurs and can contribute toward whiplash, blood vessel destruction, vertebral injury and
permanent paralysis. Further, pressure on the spinal cord in the cervical region can
compromise the function of other organs because virtually all of the nerves to the rest of
the body pass through the neck to reach their final destinations. Serious neck problems,
therefore, should be discussed with your primary care physician who may refer you to a
specialist such as a neurosurgeon who can accurately diagnose the problem and
prescribe the proper treatment. Specifically, seek help:
- If neck pain occurs after an injury or blow to the head
- If there is a tingling sensation, numbness or weakness in your arms or hands
- If neck pain is accompanied by fever or frequent headaches
- If stiffness in the neck prevents you from touching your chin to your chest
- If there is a sharp pain down one arm
- If neck symptoms are accompanied by leg weakness or a loss of coordination
between arms and legs
- If neck pain does not respond to over-the-counter pain medication or does not
improve after one week
