ALIF Procedure

Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion is similar to PLIF, but is done from either the front
(anterior) of the body or the side, usually through a 3 - 5 inch incision into the lower
abdominal area that preserves muscle tissue.  The incision may involve a cut through,
and later a repair of, the muscles in the lower abdomen.  Disc material is then removed
and a bone graft inserted that stabilizes the spine and facilitates fusion.
